The Smart Momma Guide To Easing Nausea And Vomiting

An inevitable part of infancy is throwing up, feeling nauseous and tummy upsets. With a host of reasons leading to puking or nausea, the few widely prevalent ones are:

  • Stomach Flu – Not associated to influenza, gastroenteritis occurs due to the presence of certain kinds of bacterial, viral and parasitic forms – and mostly leading to diarrhea and queasiness among grownups and children.
  • Allergic reaction to foods and gastric irritations – Though any kind of victuals could elicit a reaction, certain food items tend to mostly lead to food allergies like eggs, milks, peanuts, soy, wheat, fish and tree nuts. The adverse reactions of queasiness, stomach pain could begin in minutes or hours following the intake of these foods.
  • Feelings of anxiousness and stressful times – Any kind of apprehensions, trepidations, and emotional disturbances could cause these signs, though mostly seen in adults or older kids.
  • Infant vomitingFlu or other ailment-associated symptoms – Those having ear infections, seasonal flu or swine flu, acid reflux and reactions to particular medicines could also experience nausea or throwing up.
  • Overeating – Gorging down on food, and not paying attention to one’s stomach capacity could often lead to unsettled stomach and often throw up sessions.
  • Victuals poisoning – Rare meats, dairy produce or foods that could be lying around for long spans of time could lead to throwing up, loose motions, stomach pain and cramping- all signs of food poisoning.

Prudent Pointers for Moms and Dads:

  • Keeping the child hydrated following a throw-up. Waiting for about an hour’s time prior to offering any food to the child. Giving the stomach time to clear up by offering teaspoonfuls of liquids at a time, to be offered at frequent intervals.
  • Holding up solid foods till 6 hours since the past puking session. Starting with bland-tasting foods that are easily assimilated like crackers, toast or gelatine-based foods and eventually graduating to salted, protein and carbohydrate-rich foods, avoiding overly spiced or greasy foods. Most parents make the cardinal mistake of offering solid/ liquids too early on, and allowing the kid to intake whatever quantities he/she desires and not maintaining limits.
  • Keeping away from overpowering smells such as scents, burning or cooking smells. Unventilated rooms, iridescent lights, and driving could additionally elicit further spells of nausea and vomiting.
  • Antihistamines could be beneficial in motion-sickness related symptoms and antiemetic medications occurring due to bacterial or abdominal irritation. However, anti-emetics must be avoided to treat infant vomiting occurring because of viral gastroenteritis. Though the kids find its taste quite repulsive.
  • For stomach upset, acetaminophen (Tylenol) usually does not seem to be working and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) could at times lead to worsening of abdominal pain if the pain is occurring due to ulcer.
