Schilder’s Disease

Schilder’s Disease is an atypical, progressive demyelinising condition majorly affecting the central nervous system that typically starts in infancy. This neurological disorder causes major harm to the myelin sheath of the nerve fiber observed to affect a whole lobe (a section of the brain like the frontal, occipital or parietal) or even hemisphere (the entire half of one) that could prove perilous to one who has the disorder.

Schilders Disease Causes:

Doctors speculate that it might be occurring due to certain kinds of medications, heredity factors among others. Though the damage to the myelin sheath of the nerve fibers is the most certain reason behind this disorder occurring.

Schilders Disease Symptoms:

The signs could be wide-ranging and could exhibit signs that could be confused with other diseases. However, emphasis is laid on getting tested only when few of these symptoms surface together.

schilders diseaseSymptoms could comprise of dementia, aphasia, seizures, behavioural alterations, and attention deficit, trembling, stance unsteadiness, bladder incontinence, weakness felt in the muscles, headaches, puking, impaired eye sight and speech.

These are not the only signs and few individuals could have other forms of symptoms though they appear inconsistently.

Schilders Disease Treatment:

As this disorder bears similarity with multiple sclerosis, hence the treatments are also analogous to those employed in MS. The recognized line of treatment involves the use corticosteroids, beta-interferon or immunosuppressive treatment and symptomatic treatment.

These treatments help in restricting the progression of the disease but do not cure it. With no cure for the disorder, there could be situations when the disease might show remission or conversely it could evolve into a more terrible and lethal form.

Prognosis:

The course and prognosis of Schilder’s disease is much like multiple sclerosis and is highly capricious. In some persons, the progression of the disease ensues at a steady, incessant manner while there might be others whose condition could show major improvement and even reduction.

In few situations, the disease could take a fatal turn. As Schilder’s disease bears resemblances with MS, it is a neurological ailment that could blight a person’s life to an extent leading to fatality.
