Increasing a Baby’s Appetite: Some Guidelines



Are you worried about the decreasing appetite of your baby? It’s quite natural. If the baby does not eat enough food, parents often feel worried as doing so may deprive the little one from all the required nutrients. The doctors however do not become concerned unless the growth of the baby is affected by his irregular eating habit. When the baby is taken to the pediatrician for regular checkups, he will check your baby’s body weight and growth. If the checkup reveals that the weight of your baby is lower than normal and he is having a lesser growth rate compared to his peers, the doctor will offer you some guidelines for increasing your baby’s appetite.

Increasing a baby's appetiteThe doctor will recommend diagnostic tests for detecting whether the baby is having any underlying medical problem; if detected, the underlying medical problem will be treated. As the illness will get cured, the appetite of the baby will increase automatically.

If the medical tests does not reveal presence of any health problem in the baby. The doctor will suggest including certain changes in the meal and eating style of the baby.

Allow the baby to have his food independently. Babies can be offered finger foods after they cross the age of 8 months; this will help them to learn how to have food absolutely on their own. The baby might feel like eating more as he will be the one controlling the quantity of food to be consumed.

Appetite of a baby can be increased by reducing the amount of juice offered to him. According to nutritionists, a baby should not have more than 6 ounces juice in a day.

Eating should be a fun experience for the baby. Keep on making eye contact with the baby while feeding him; chat with him and smile. It can be anything breast milk, baby formulas or solid foods, the baby will enjoy eating if he finds that you are also having fun while feeding him.
