Here are some tips for teaching your child the art of reading:
First teach alphabets:
Before learning how to read, a child must learn alphabets. A normal child must be able to learn letters after completing the age of 2 years. Instead of teaching the child letters in the A to Z procedure, starting with the first letter of his name will make the process much easier for the little one. Using rhymes and songs starting with an alphabet may help the child to memorize it easily. Buy him alphabet toys like refrigerator magnets, bath sponges etc. This will make them more familiar with the alphabets.
Read together:
The process of reading together must be loud enough so that the child can understand the pronunciation of letters and words. This step should be started when the child has successfully learnt the alphabets. The ideal age of reading along with the child is when the child is between 2 and 3 years of age. If you read out loud from a book with lots of pictures, the child will repeat what you are saying and will also start identifying the words that are describing the pictures. By the time he becomes 4 years of age, he will be identifying the right words for the right pictures with almost 100% accuracy.
Next teach the child the connection between writing and reading:
Learning how to write plays a big role in helping a child to read fluently. However, you should not try to teach the child the art of writing before he reaches the age of 4 years. Children below 4 years of age mostly do not have the intellect or motor skills required for writing. Like you did while teaching him reading letters, start with teaching how to write the initial letter of his name. As he is aware of how the letter looks, he will first try to draw the letter. Within sometime as he approaches the age of 5, he will be able to write some simple words and also learn how to read them perfectly.
