- The growth of the fetus can be disrupted when the expecting mother suffers from a fever. This is truer in case of fever during the 1st trimester. Majority o the medical practitioner advices use of Tylenol, an acetaminophen for lowering fevers during pregnancy. Pregnant women should never take this medication without consulting her supervising gynecologist; the gynecologist will guide her about the safe dosage of acetaminophen. Other common fever lowering medicinal drugs like ibuprofen
and aspirin should not be taken by pregnant women.
- Pregnant women suffering from fever should have adequate rest; they must sleep for a minimum of 8 hours every day. This will allow the body enough time for fighting the infections causing the fever. If possible, women with fever during pregnancy should take a nap as many times as she can all through the day.
- Last, but not the least, when a pregnant woman develops fever she must make sure that her body stays cool. As the body temperature of the expecting mother increases, the body temperature of the growing fetus also increases, which can cause serious harm to the fetus. This makes cooling down the body of the pregnant women the most essential step. For that, the environment around the pregnant woman must be cooled down either with an air conditioning device or with a fan. The expecting mother should wear light, comfortable and loose clothing. If required cool baths are also recommended.
