Death of 10-Year-Old ‘Mermaid Syndrome’ Girl With Fused Lower Body



A U.S-based girl having a congenitally atypical condition known as ‘mermaid syndrome’, cheated death for nearly a decade. Due to being born with this syndrome also called sirenomelia, Shiloh Pepin had conjoint legs, one partly functional kidney, and absence of a lower colon or genitalia.

According to her doctors, Shiloh was anticipated to have a maximum life expectancy of only ten hours that could have stretched to possibly few days following her birth. However, she surpassed all hopes. Few of those children that do manage to survive sirenomelia undergo operative procedures for separating their legs. But, Shiloh was not able to undergo the surgery as the blood vessels in her circulatory system that criss-crossed from one side to the other side made it a tricky venture and would most probably have been cut off during the surgery.

The 10-year old girl has undergone 2 kidney transplant operation with the very last being held in 2007.

She was quickly admitted to the Maine Medical Centre on 10th October afternoon by her mother Leslie Pepin. She continued to remain in hospital stay for about seven days and was started on a course of antibiotics and kept on ventilator support. She finally died on Friday afternoon after matters deteriorated.

For a sometime, her mother Leslie Pepin stated that her condition was appearing to show positive signs. She fondly describes her daughter as a tough little thing who braved quite a lot of odds prior to finally giving in.

The little angel garnered a swarm of followers on the internet and the United States television and her story was lately shown on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Shiloh studied in the fifth grade at the Kennebunkport Consolidated School.

The chairperson belonging to the panel of the regional school district, Maureen King, fondly remembers how the girl’s personality truly outshone all others in that school.

Counselling would be offered to the students of the school the subsequent week.
